Hint Area Specialise Books

I have many ideas for the blog. But my hunch is that I will not have the time to produce something half as good as I wanted it to be. Nonetheless, nothing is going to surface without a try. Recently Nobody told me peeking is a good way to hunt for a Spec Book. At the very least, it reduces the need to kill so many mobs and save us a tremendous amount of time and effort. So I learn the Book of Spying and started to do some snooping around today. Surprisingly (with a huge amount of luck), I found the Spec Book that I hinted for within 2 minutes. I am going to jot down which mob I found the book on and this post will be constantly updated. However, it will never be efficient enough based on my own effort. If you are a HOTL3 player, I hope you will contribute your information to help the community. I will need your collective effort to make this post successful and meaningful to old and new players alike.

Tips For Noobs

3 weeks into the game, I wouldn't claim to be a know-it-all in the game. In fact, my game has been revolving around leveling so far. In terms of map exploration, questing and other aspects (what?) of the game, I am still at baby level. It is necessary, however, to quickly jot down some points that I found useful for my early game. They may be just trivial tips but never underestimate the impact it can offer for your HOTL3 experience if you put them together, along with some of the techniques I may have missed out. Let's cut the bullshit and here we go,

Time the tick

In HOTL3 (or perhaps in most MUDs?), a "tick" is the pulse of the game. For in every tick, thousands of events happened at the same time. Mobiles (monsters, NPCs) move, NPC talks, event updates, your lifeforce regens (if you are resting) The key thing to focus on in the beginning is during Combat and Regenerating between battles. For every tick, every boon on yourself reduces by 1 hour. Avoid getting into a situation where your Earthshields and Manashields wear out during combat. As a noob without high HP buffers, that possibly meant death when it happens.

In between battles, groupies have a tendency to move on to the next mob before resting. That is as noobish as you can get because more often than not, the entire group will miss the tick for regen and have to wait an entire 30 seconds more for their first regen tick. If there is a tick coming on, you should stop walking, rest or sleep, then wake and carry on walking to the next mob. These 30 seconds you save will go a long way as it accumulates.

As for how to time the tick, most good MUD clients offer a ticker system. You may want to do that. Even a spare physical alarm clock can do the trick for you in front of your desktop. I'll leave that up to your creativity.

Clan rest

Resting in clan allows you to regenerate much faster. If you join a clan, use that to your advantage.

Speedwalk

Some areas in HOTL3 can be very far away from the starting point. A pre-programmed macro that performs a series of walking directions is what players call a Speedwalk. As the name implies, it helps you to get to places faster. Highly recommended to save you loads of time and the agony of getting lost in the text jungle.

High wimpy

Wimpy is a value you can set to your HP that trigger an auto-flee when you are beaten down to that HP level. That is an absolute gem because you should never be overconfident that you will be able to flee (there is a chance to fail) when you need to, or having enough HP when you are fleeing (you get hit another few times WHILE you flee) or when you will be hit by lag or disconnection. As a noob, ALWAYS set your wimpy high. Death penalty ranges from 150-500 experience loss. Do the maths and you'll see it is just not worth gambling to nick an exciting last gasp battle. If you die 10 times and lost 500 experience each time, that is worth about 5 levels at low gens. So don't die. Let wimpy be your friend.

Money run

The reason why they term it as Money Run is because in HOTL3, money runs away from you faster than you earn, unless extra effort is put in to accumulate more gold for future use. Don't be fooled by the TOP SCORE richest player. At the point this is written, the player is Nobody at more than 80 million gold. Most players in the game are pissed poor. In fact, I wonder if Nobody is involved in some kind of money laundering or investment services found in some obscure unknown bank in The Astral Plane that offers a sexy interest rate for your banked gold with them. If there is an opportunity, I will like to pin Nobody down to write a Gold Accumulation Guide if he is generous enough to share.

Coming back to the importance of money running, it is a good thing to do it when you have "nothing" to do, such as waiting for a good moon to gain level or in between fusion or waiting for a long quest update. In that way, you will not run out of gold and cannot afford the training fees of leveling up like I did.

Use your practices wisely

While it is common to use practices liberally for books and skills that will help you in leveling but not intended to be "E-ed" during fusion - or even "overtraining" of stats- , don't get yourself caught out having not enough practices to skill up your crucial skills that you want to increase their level of proficiency after fusion. Do a mental calculation and reserve enough practices to relearn skills later on.

Get a good client

Every player swears by their own client. There are some clients which are particularly popular with HOTL3 players, such as Zmud, Mudlet, Mushclient etc. There are reasons for that. Don't be shy to ask players what clients they use and why. Most of them will be happy to share about what functions they found useful with their respective clients. At this point of time, it seems that I'm the only one using a mud client called Portal because none of them have heard about it.

Accumulate good equipment

Along with wisely chosen skill sets, a good range of equipment will go a long way for your HOTL3 adventure. I was lucky enough to be given a decent set of EQ by Thor the IMP who happened to be around when I first joined the game. It has been helpful and I am still keeping many of those items. In time to come, perhaps we should set up a clan to help newbies hunt for their early equipment. In the meantime, don't feel shy to ask players for help to get the equipment that you need.
